Thermal Coal

Maatrisaa Global Resources Limited sources steam coal from Indonesia and Australia and has in place long-term supply agreements with coalmines in these countries.

Indonesia has invested in the exploitation of coal resources and stands at third position among global coal producers. In 2020, coal production in Indonesia and Australia was 562.5 million tons and 476.7 million tons respectively. As per the estimate of IEA, global production of coal in 2019 was 7.9 billion tons. Global Data estimates that coal production is expected to see a CAGR of 2.3% between 2021-2025. Thermal coal and lignite made up around 86% of this production, and the remainder was metallurgical coal.

There are 1,156 Billion tons (short tons, st) of proven coal reserves in the world as of 2020. At current consumption rate, and expected technological advancement these deposits can last several hundred years.

Maatrisaa sources its coal supply from best deposits. Our fine texture of Steam Coal finds its extensive application in iron, cement, bricks and many more industries. In the process of steam electric power generation, this coal is widely used as a fuel. Steam coal is used in manufacturing and to make coke. The steam coal is basically of black color and sometimes of brown color. It is available in different form like powder or different sizes of rock shape. Apart from this, the Steam Coal (Thermal Coal) is provided in excellent packaging to prevent them from dust and moisture.

Features:

  • Accurate composition
  • Longer shelf life
  • Precise ignition point

Low Sulfur Content

Indonesia produces primarily steam coal. This coal has a very low content of ash and sulfur, i.e. below 1%. The largest share of the mined coal is of low calorific range with a calorific value between 5,500 and 6,000 kcal/kg. In the high calorific range coal between 6,100 and 6,700 kcal/kg is mined. Due to scarce resources, Coking coal for coke production is of minor importance.

Coal Shipment

The export and shipping port capacities have permanently increased in the past years in Indonesia. The larger ports are concentrated on the East coast of Kalimantan. These ports allow loading of Panamax and Capesize vessels with a capacity of 50,000 or more than 80,000 tons, respectively. Collectively, these ports reach loading capacities of more than 100 million tons per annum.

In addition to this, there are a multitude of smaller coal loading ports which allow for a loading of the so called “handysize bulk carriers” reaching up to 50,000 tons. In addition to this there are also offshore loading capacities. In these cases the coal is transported by means of smaller bulk carriers on rivers so that it must then be reloaded to larger vessels.

World’s Largest Coal Exporter

Australian and Indonesian steam coal exports are primarily directed towards the Pacific market; only a small amount of tonnages is exported to Europe and America. Buyer countries, use Australia and Indonesia as “Swing-Suppliers”, i.e. coal purchases from these countries depend on attractive price and market situations.

The most important buyer of Australian and Indonesian steam coal in the Pacific region is Japan with approximately 35 million tons of import. Other significant buyers are Taiwan, South Korea and India. China with approximately 20 million tons per year is also an important buyer.
